Roanoke Resource is a mental health agency located in the heart of downtown Roanoke, Virginia. Roanoke Resource provides person-centered services in order to restore hope, self-esteem, and empowerment.

Mental Health Community Support Services (MHCSS)

Mental health community support services is a one-to-one service provided in the community or home based on consumer directed goals.


  • MHCSS Purpose:
    • Providing education on health, safety, and medication management
    • Providing training on activities of daily living
    • Assisting and encouraging utilization of beneficial community resources
    • Reducing risk of required professional interventions such as psychiatric hospitalizations and judicial interventions
    • Providing training in establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships
    • Assisting and providing training in basic living skills
  • MHCSS Services Provided:
    • Attending all medical, psychiatric, and counseling appointments
    • Medication education
    • Independent living skills
    • Management of personal finances
    • Interpersonal relationships
    • Activities of daily living
    • Appropriate nutrition and exercise
    • Assistance in identifying recreational activities of interest
    • Accessing/Maintaining housing
    • Utilization of community resources
    • Health/Medical education
  • MHCSS Eligibility Criteria:
    • Have a serious mental illness/emotional disturbance. This may include individuals with a dual diagnosis of either mental illness and developmental disability or mental illness and substance use disorder
      • Major Depression, recurrent
      • Bipolar I or II
      • Psychotic Disorders
    • Must be an adult
    • Have a history of psychiatric hospitalization or other qualifying event
    • Being under the care of a psychiatric provider
    • Have a prescription for a psychiatric medication (anti-depressant, mood stabilizer, anxiolytic, anti-psychotic)
  • We accept the following insurances or payments for MHCSS:
    • Medicaid
    • DAP Funding
    • Private Pay

Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) - What PSR is and Does

Psychosocial rehabilitation is a program provided to groups of adults, in a non-residential setting, for two or more consecutive hours per day.


  • PSR Purpose:
    • Providing education on health, safety, and medication management
    • Providing training on activities of daily living
    • Assisting and encouraging utilization of beneficial community resources
    • Reducing risk of required professional interventions such as psychiatric hospitalizations and judicial interventions
    • Providing training in establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships
    • Assisting and providing training in basic living skills
    • Understanding and utilizing peer support in the recovery process
  • PSR Services Provided:
    • Activity based groups provided in the Roanoke Resource facility
      • Health and safety
      • Nutrition and exercise
      • Coping skills
      • Interpersonal relationship and social skills
      • Identifying beneficial community resources and recreational activities of interest
      • Budgeting and finances
      • Peer support
      • Medication management
    • Activity based groups provided in the community
      • Supervised practice of socialization skills
      • Increasing the consumers understanding of community resources
      • Providing an opportunity to give back to community through volunteerism
  • PSR Eligibility Criteria:

  • Psychiatric Services is open to anyone in need of psychiatric evaluation, diagnostics, and medication management
  • Serving: Adolescent through Geriatric
  • Accepting Medicaid, Medicare, most commercial insurances, and private pay

Counseling Services

  • Counseling services is open to anyone who needs help processing life stressors
  • Serving: adults 18 and above
  • Accepting Medicaid, Medicare, most commercial insurances, and private pay

CPR and First Aid

  • ASHI BLS/First Aid
  • Blended courses for infant, child, and adult BLS/First Aid
    • Student completes course work online first
    • Then student schedules a hands-on skills check off with instructor to get BLS/FA card
      • Flexible scheduling

    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 1500 hours of experience with adults with SMI
    • OR bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field and 3000 hours of experience with adults with SMI
    • OR registered nurse with 1500 hours of experience with adults with SMI
    • Active registration through the Department of Health Professions (DHP) as a QMHP-A
  • QPPMH
    • Associate’s degree in Human Services and 2080 hours of clinical experience with adults with SMI
  • QMHP-T
    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
    • Active registration through the DHP as QMHP-T
  • Additional requirements for CSS position:
    • Current CPR/First Aid certifications
    • Valid driver’s license
    • Current car insurance
    • Reliable vehicle
    • Ability to pass a background investigation
    • Ability to pass a drug screen
